Why do the directions say to take these on an empty stomach for the best experience?

Even if it is just a little hiccup, we wanted to let you know... Our new PhD Formulascontain vegan omega-3 DHA from algal oil to support brain health and deliver a high-quality source of essential fatty acids.* How your body processes this ingredient differs by individual. But it's important to note that, like with all encapsulated fish oil, algal oil and similar health supplements, a small percentage of people might experience a “marine aftertaste” (aka fish burp) after taking this supplement. However, taking it without food can help eliminate this. Here's why. To break it down a bit further, the introduction of food changes the acidic environment of the stomach. When this happens, the capsule may break down and release algal oil into the stomach as opposed to the small intestine, where it's intended to break down and get absorbed. This may cause a marine aftertaste. While we've noted that taking it without food can address this issue, individual reactions may vary. And that's no fish story.

How do you choose the nutrient levels in your formulas?

Based on recommendations from The National Academies, Health and Medicine Division (formerly the Institute of Medicine) and advice from leading nutrition experts and our Scientific Advisory Board, we carefully-select our ingredients and put each nutrient through a rigorous screening process.

With that information, we ensure that our multifunctional formulas fill a range of nutrient gaps in the average Western diet. So, you get more of the nutrients you want and less of what you don't - all in one easy serving.

What does “allergen free” mean?

All SmartyPants products are free of the top 8 major allergens – milk, eggs, peanuts, fish, shellfish, soy, wheat, and tree nuts allergens. SmartyPants PhD are also non-GMO, gluten-free, gelatin-free and do not contain any synthetic colors.

Is it okay to combine this formula with other SmartyPants products?

Since our PhD formula is a premium multivitamin, it should not be combined with an additional multivitamin. With that said, it can be combined with our probiotic or mineral formulas depending on your digestive or mineral needs. As always, we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider to identify the right amounts for your specific dietary needs.

How big are the capsules? How many do I have to take?

The PhD capsules are approximately 3/4 inches long and 1/4 inches wide. Adults take two (2) capsules daily, with or without food. For best results, take on an empty stomach.

Is there Iron in SmartyPants PhD Pill? Why?

There is iron in the Women's and Prenatal PhD Formulas, but not the Men's Formula. Iron is an essential nutrient for good health, especially for the health of our red blood cells, and is excreted from the body through blood loss, thus women who are menstruating can benefit from supplemental iron. In terms of iron being included in the Prenatal formula, expectant mothers have heightened needs and require an increase in many of our essential daily nutrients, with iron being one of those.

We made this product with the health and safety of our own family in mind, so you can be sure we thought long and hard about every nutrient we included in our PhD formulas. As always, speak with your healthcare provider to identify the right amount of iron supplementation for your needs.
